Babe Ruth, Alarmed

Yankees holding the Trophy Polishing Moment at their midtown suite display (about a 45-second walk from my office) Friday afternoon and I couldn’t resist. But what do you find really interesting about this photo?

That’s right – it’s the photo of The Babe on the far left, looking as if somebody just told him the upper deck was on fire, with all his money in it. Have you ever seen that shot before? I couldn’t elude the overhead fluorescents, but I did my best.

The uniform suggests this was not taken in New York (the Yankees wore pinstripe uniforms without any logo at home throughout the ’20s, and “YANKEES” as above, on the road). But of course it’s that extreme concern (“Is that zeppelin going to clear that Stutz Bearcat dealership?”) that is so compelling and invites the inevitable:

Gotta make that my photo ID…
Yes, I’m tweeting. @KeithOlbermann – baseball, inside television, advisories of new blog posts here – so far no politics but that’ll probably change (let’s put it this way: it will presented gently).

Funny you should post that right now. I was about to tell you how you?re falling down on the job, because I had to learn a baseball fact from a bar photo! I was in one in Oakland tonight (a bar, not a photo) and saw a picture of the 1954 NY Giants. Yes, the baseball team. I did not know they were from NY. I tried to take a photo of it, but the iPhone does not have a flash and I?m not tall enough to have gotten the light angle I needed. I?m sure that?s somehow your fault too. Keith, what else do I need to know about baseball that you haven?t taught me yet?

Okay, yeah, I?m just having fun with you. Or at you. Or at me. Anyway, there was another photo that I just tweeted you. It?s a horrible picture of a picture, but it confused the heck out of me. I?m sure you?ll see it right there among the millions of tweets from your other thousands of admiring fans. Baseball fans, of course. Ahem.
Don’t you sometimes wish this blog’s comments were limited to 140 characters?

Interesting… to me, he doesn’t look so much as if he’s alarmed, but as if he’s thinking “Jeez… when’s this guy gonna take my picture already?? Wait – are you serious?? I look away for one second and the guy takes my picture? Damned paparazzi!” 🙂 As someone who has taken my share of pictures… that’s the time when it’s the most fun to take a picture – when the subject is doing something other than just smiling for the camera. I do try to honor the wishes of those I photograph, but sometimes the candid shots are just so much fun. P.S. – love the Thurber, but hoping for “The Owl Who Was God” someday soon. Very timely. Or is it cheating to mention it here instead of on Twitter? Anyway… hope your “eardrums” are doing much better. You seem to have gotten the hang of Twitter very quickly, but I expected no less. 🙂 Happy Trophy Polishing Day – hope you enjoyed it! You looked very sharp tonight – just had to say it. Night!

*laughing* I noticed that photo in the background if the one you tweeted yesterday afternoon, Keith…..figures you’d have some fun with it 😀

I’m currently reading The Bullpen Gospels and am enjoying it immensely, locker room humor and all 😉 Of course, since my father was a trucker(used to come home and tell me the jokes–not clean ones, either– that he’d heard on the road, much to my mother’s dismay), plus I also spent my working years(prior to my becoming disabled) in factories, that’s the kind of stuff I find hilarious 😉 Thanks for recommending the book……I never would have discovered it otherwise.

My Twitter ID is the same as the one I have here, but I’m NightOwl40 at Daily Kos 🙂

I think it’s a great shot of him. He doesn’t seem afraid to me, but rather interested in something. Almost angelic, even.

In other baseball news, I tweeted you about this briefly, but there are many A’s fans that believe that Selig and Wolff are conspiring to degrade the A’s so badly that they will “have” to move out of Oakland. Create the problem, point out the problem, provide a solution. Just for example, their advertising is often inept and the radio station they “partner” with shuts down by 7:30 p.m. – so they can’t even carry the games! What nonsense is that?

Some I’ve talked to are afraid they will resort even to making personnel changes in the games to make sure they lose! I hope this move doesn’t happen! If these two former frat brothers are conspiring to rob Oakland of its shining star for personal reasons (dislike of Oakland and/or blacks maybe?).

Here’s a story from the Contra Costa Times on the matter: http://www.contracostatimes.com/sports/ci_14413828?nclick_check=1

If we can get to the release of the movie Moneyball, perhaps we can turn around the damage done to the franchise if it hasn’t been moved out by then.

Keith and The Babe . . . dashing . . . dashing! I don’t know if you choose your own clothing, or if there’s a battalion of wardrobe people behind the scenes making those decisions for you, but props to whoever keeps you looking like a million bucks and your suits nice and crisp. Good job.
Thanks so much for the double dose of Thurber last night. You looked like you were having a good time! I especially enjoyed ?The Unicorn In The Garden.? My modern take on it is this: forget divorce, forget ?gaslighting? – that’s the smart way to get rid of your spouse!
    Keep those Thurbers coming, Tweetie!
    😀

What I find “really interesting”about this photo is that Reggie Jackson has seemingly hit a screaming line drive that has somehow been magically transformed into Keith Olbermann standing next to the World Series trophy.
