We Shall Not Forget (Provided You Pay)

For four years, MLB has exploited all the in-season holidays – Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day – plus on many occasions 9/11, by having all players wear special caps. Today, caps with an American flag patch stitched on the back, to the left of the inviolable MLB logo, were worn by all clubs and all players.

So, in New York, where in 2001 first the Mets and then the Yankees honored the fallen members of – and the heroic and selfless acts of – the New York Police Department, the New York Fire Department, New York EMS, Port Authority Police, New York Sanitation, and several others by wearing their caps during the games of the weeks after the attacks, Major League Baseball denied the Mets the opportunity to wear those caps again, just for tonight’s anniversary game, the only one being played within a thirty minute ride to the World Trade Center.

According to team Player Representative Josh Thole, the Mets players debated violating the dictum and wearing them anyway. Thole told reporters shortly thereafter that the league was adamant and it was a “no-go.” It is meaningful to realize that only three current Mets were even in the majors a decade ago: Miguel Batista, Willie Harris, and Jason Isringhausen. Evidently the Commissioner’s representative reminded them that the punishment – a heavy fine – would be meted out on ownership, not them (and for all we know, a major fine might cause this team to go out of business before noon tomorrow). For his part, David Wright wore a Police cap on the bench, but even he resisted the temptation to wear it on the field and incur the wrath of the Bean Counters in the Commissioner’s Office.

Those bloodless MLB individuals have been down this path before. Ten years ago, Bud Selig’s initially ruled the Mets and Yankees could not wear the caps during games. The Mets ignored the threat, and MLB decided to give them a pass for a game or two, and then the Mets kept wearing them, and MLB wisely backed off their nonsensical decision. Tonight’s ruling reminded everybody that at the moment of the nation’s greatest grief, MLB’s money-making instinct was unhindered by the blood and destruction and fear.

At least in 2001 the sport was smart enough to shut up. Not this year. MLB first blocked the Washington Nationals from wearing military caps in tribute after a disaster in Afghanistan last month. Then came this decision, complete with in the kind of stupidity that would make a megalomaniac proud: they blamed it on MLB Vice President Joe Torre, the native New Yorker who wore these caps at the end of the 2001 season. So if it hadn’t been shameful already, pinning it on Torre made it doubly shameful.

As an aside, I should note that I actually got a tweet from an idiot who wondered why I thought wearing the NYPD/NYFD/PAPD/EMS caps was somehow “patriotic.” It never crossed my mind. It has nothing to do with patriotism. 343 firefighters and paramedics died that day. 23 New York policemen did. And 47 from the Port Authority Police. This is about remembering them – and acknowledging what all those who survived did for this city and the wounds they still have. For me, as the grandson of a New York fireman, and the descendant of several others, and many NYPD and regional PD, this is something deeper than patriotism.

CitiField is, of course, ringed with commemorations and in particular the “We Shall Not Forget” logo placed in the ad right behind the batter’s box. And it has all been rendered utterly hollow because of the crassness of the decision about the NYPD/FD/EMS caps. If you still haven’t figured out why MLB is permitting this public relations disaster to happen; why Commissioner Bud Selig didn’t get on the phone and tell the Mets they could wear those caps right away and damn the consequences, the answer is to be found here.

In case you don’t want to follow the link, here’s your answer: this is available as of tonight directly from MLB for just $36.99.

I guess we should be happy it has an American flag, and that MLB just didn’t sell the space to the highest bidder.

Nitpick: ‘policemen’ should be ‘police officers’ (Moira Smith was among the 23 lost). Great post. Can’t believe they did that.

Good to know that MLB only respects the all mighty dollar and nothing else. What a shame. I wonder how the NFL responded today?

More proof that MLB and Bud Selig are a bunch of blithering morons…

You forgot to mention that the hat is made in China.

LOL

The NFL responded by saying that players wouldn’t be fined for wearing gear that was patriotic (as long as it was Reebok). Sure, sponsorship still applies but it was better than nothing. Also, the coaching staffs are wearing caps on both sidelines, which are clearly not Reebok made.

I know what MLB was wrong, but how does that make what NFL better? They still mandated what could be worn… Baseball still had their costly version. I’m really tired of people trying to make the NFL look good. They are no better!

Keith,

The St. Lucie Mets wore the tribute caps today in the FSL playoffs.

Well said Keith and thank you for writing about this autrocity. The almighty dollar wins again and common decency loses.

Here is one vote for not purchasing this hat or anything else from the MLB shop ever again.

I’m continually disappointed in the money-grubbing leadership in MLB. It seems that everything in the sport is done with an eye towards the question “how much can we make on merchandising?”

$36.99 says the hats are CHINA made. Seems like everything I have that is official MLB is China made. That is totally offensive and reflective if the stupidity of the MLB front office. Wear the hats, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

KO thank you so much for saying this. It even more outragous know that the NFL allowed it. The commisioner and others diffently deserved worsts, and I bet those flags were also skitched in China. Thanks for showing why you are this generations Murrow and why you are putting Current on tha map, even if I disagree with you it just makes me love you more because it shows how passionate and how principled you are. Keep it up. All you have to be is yourself and you will always have a viewer and fan.

in the smaller print below the cap

Country Of Origin : China

well said Keith. I know you weren’t the only person in the media who was outraged by this matter, and so were lots of my Mets-fan friens.

It should have been no big deal for the Mets and Yankees to honor FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, OEM, etc. and for the Nationals to honor the Pentagon version of those groups for Sunday’s games. God Ble$$ Ameri¢a.

Great job Keith. Perfectly stated. FYI, according to RA Dickey the hat you mentioned David Wright was wearing on the bench was confiscated in the 4th inning by MLB officials. That’s right confiscated. What was he a bad kid playing with a toy during class? What a joke.

Pingback: On pro baseball, Sept. 11 and a major misstep by MLB | The Summer of Dreams

At a recent garage sale, there were hoards of new baseball caps…and they were all fifty cents each. It looks like the baby got thrown out with the bath water! One has to have a head to remember…or to wear a cap. Where is theirs? ;)

Don’t forget to mention this. It could cloud your view of the story.
“A portion of the proceeds will be donated to:
9/11 Memorial and Museum
Flight 93 Memorial
Pentagon Memorial”

That’s nice. I’ll send $10 to each of those organizations directly, and MLB can keep their ugly ballcap. (That’s not even a decent flag patch, ferluvvamud!)

Incidentally, Joe Torre’s Yankees did NOT wear the caps at the end of all of 2001. They stayed in uniform. They had some explanation that the “interlocking NY” was originally from a police officer’s logo or something, and that was tribute enough. Maybe they wore them during BP, but would not wear them during games (tho’ they could have).

The Mets could have and SHOULD have defied the MLB cap edict. That they didn’t is just another example of how this franchise has diminished itself over recent years. Any fine would have been meaningless. It would be, basically MLB fining itself, since they have already extended financial aid to the club _ here, take some of your own money back – now may we borrow some more? Management should have stepped up to the plate on this one and taken the heat for the players, who clearly wanted to wear the NYPD/NYFD caps as a tribute. And for MLB to fob off to Joe Torre the job of putting a name on its shameless corporate decision is a slap in the face to the entire city. Torre’s own team (which shall go nameless here) wouldn’t even wear the caps in 2001 (using the lame excuses others have already noted) when they choked away the World Series that fall _ and even team management publicly sniped at the Mets for their public efforts to help the city’s relief efforts. Bottom line – just like you can lose respect for a team for not standing up for players who get thrown at (Mike Piazza and David Wright for example) the Mets lost some of my respect for not standing up for their city last night.

Somehow, I don’t think we’ve recieved the entire story on what actually happened. Part of me believes the mets are trying to exploit this for thier own purposes, so that they can “claim” that other teams are somehow less patriotic than they themselves are. I heard them talk about it on there company owned broadcast of their game againsts the Nats on SNY. Personally, I agree with Mike Francesca, which is a first for me, when he says that he finds it awfully hard to get worked up over hats.

Btw, Olberman’s blogs is almost a verbatim transcript of his special comment that he delivered on this topic this evening. It doesn’t seem as if he bothered to edit it.

Personally, I believe Kieth should have gotten more worked up over the Jet’s Ceremony last night which featured a known War Criminal in President Bush. Kieth spends an inordinate amout of time criticizing the Bush administrations handling of the Iraq War and their decision use torture against pows. Yet when the NFL endorses these policies by inviting President Bush to the Pregame Ceremony, Kieth is silent. Could it be because he worked on the Pre-game for NBC’s coverage of the NFL?

Personally, I was more offended when the Yankees invited Donald Rumsfeld to their commemorative ceremony last week.

Joesph
Inviting Bush to NFL game is not never has been and never will be endorsing his policies I do not have to be a KO fan to know that is pure BS and not remotely true, inviting people to things has nothing to do with endorsing policies. Espically when it a sporting invent, I have seen Rice at US Open does that mean that I stop watching Tennis no because her being there does not mean that tennis is endorssing thier policies. This about MLB being insentive to what the Mets wanting to honor hero’s and more concered about profit, thanks for showing that you have no clue what endorssing a policy and a poltican watching or supporting a sport. No wonder KO is this generations Murrow and unlike you knows what honesty and principles are. I do not have again to be a fan to know that is embarradssing bashing post that you just worte and shows why KO is needed and why I will always be a fan and makes me respect him more. Please learn politicans going to sporting events does not never has and never will mean or be an example of supporting policy you just showed why KO has no idea how to be hypocrite and lier and that you are clueless about what endorssing means.

Also Joesph
You just hit why this is a bad decision, this has nothing to do with patroitism, what you and Mike do not get is that resuce workers that were hit on 911 were from New York because that is where the twim towers were. This city is one that is going to feel the most effected, KO put it right when another guy was getting on his case about this what if it had been 343 chicago firefighters would be saying the stuff that you did. KO was right on the money on this one. Mets had every right to wear those caps. I hate to break it but this could be anywhere I would know that everybody should is a lame excuse, hello these were New York finests and a baseball team which most of them supported should be able to honor them on a day where those finest saw a lot of thier comrands die, it just common sense here and you would see it if you would actually take in what you are reading. Again watching a sport is not an example of that support endorssing someone policies and saying everyone is just a lame exuse that they can use to try varify people making money off the back of these people. Thanks for proving KO right.

Dear Sir you seem to get a few facts WRONG. IN my humble Opinion when you invite a public figure to participate in a ceremony, YOU ARE endorsing there policies. Like it or not. That is just the way that it is. Which is why i am disturbed by the Yanks accepting advertising from Fox News.

My problem with Olberman is mostly Journalistic, in that he doesn’t seem to get his facts straight. I tuned into the game last night during the 8th inning and Wright was wearing a hat the had FDNY on it. This was well after the forth inning when it is alledged that Baseball took it away. He also failed to mention in his special comment that baseball was donating procedes from the sale of these caps to Charity If tyou listen to his special comment in its entirety, you’d get the impression that the sole purpose was to make money. Whether or not Baseball is actually profiting from the sale of these caps, I don’t really know. But I have heard it reported on ESPN that the caps were being sold to raise money for charity. But olberman doesn’t mention this in his Special Comment. He makes it sound as if Baseball is keeping all of the sales for themselves. That is not a fact, mearly a statement of his own opinion. We must be careful not to confuse opion with fact, which Olbermans special comment seems to have forgotten.

Dear Sir I notices you mentined the Late Edwin R. Murrow in your post. Unfortunately, Murrow was not quite the committed journalist that everyone remembers. The first thing he did when he left CBS to work for JFK in the 60′s was to ask the BBC to not show

Hi Joseph! Speaking of getting the facts straight, learn to spell his name correctly. Thanks.

HHarvest of shame because it negatively reflected on the Image the US wanted to project to the rest of the world.

Dear sir I am not trying to down play “patriotism” or the lose of life that occured in New York. However, New York was not the only City hit by that Tradgedy. Lets not forget that over 200 people lost their lives when one of the planes crashed into the Pentagon. Nor should we forget that the folks of flight 93 lost their lives in rural Pennsylvania while trying to liberate the plane from terrorist. This tradgedy affected the entire nation, not just New York. I don’t think I am being insenstive.

Dear Sir
you are the one that has it mostly wrong and showing that journalistically KO is right and you have no idea what honesty is, again you make no sense going to sports events are not endorssing a policy only people that care crap about truth and journalism like you do believe that. So that shows that KO is right and has always been tright jouranlistically, also this has nothing to do with not forgetting people that died in planes this sir has to deal with people that take care of the city, also donating proceeds to charity mean crap, how muxh dude to charity would have that gone to, 10% so no that is not fact and never will be. They could do like KO and donate all to charity, also Murrow told truth to power like KO does and like you have no clue about. KO is a journlist he not dishonest that is pure BS by a person that hsa no diea what jouranlism is. You cannot get that politicans going to ganes is not endorssing and the fact that you will still write this, just proves that you sir have no idea what journalism is. I watch KO he critizes both partities I have never seen him get his facts wrong that pure BS by you who has no idea what opion and facts are. Also people dying in planes do not take away the fact Joesph that most of the tradgey happened in New York and that those joseph were NY heros, so wrong Mets should have been able to wear those caps and KO unlike you was telling the truth. Keep embarrassing yourself and proving that you have no idea what journalistic dishonesty looks like. Keep proving you have no idea what a opoin is and what facts are. Keep showing me why I am right to call KO this generations Murrow and always will be. Sir grow up this no matter how you may arugue about planes mostly affected NY and Mets should be able to wear those caps. Again I want a your police officers and fire fighters experience what NY finest had to than come back and winne about planes and everyone being able to wear them, than you realize that KO was doing what he always does tell truth. Please keep embarrassing yourself with your made up crap which you know is made up, if you keep defending this stupidity of yours than all you do is show how honest KO is and that he unlike you has always shown what true jouranlism is and has unlike you never lied. Only fools believe crap about sports and endorssing. Keep it up you just not only prove me right about KO but you show why he needed and why he will put Current on the map. KO told the truth and do not put that BS about charity until you explain how much of that money was going to charity. Also I know never to listen to people who are fools and believe that a politican watching a sport means the sport endorses it that is pure BS and shows that person has no idea what honest and journalism is. Keep embarassing yourself that is all you are doing and show that KO was right on in that commentary and was truthful and principal as always.

On the flip side, I wonder if you had heard that Dirk Hayhurst was released. He put some of his gear on ebay and is going to donate the proceeds to various charities. I am proud to be the new owner of a new pair of baseball cleats, I overpaid for them, but the concept and the previous owner are the reason I did so. His new book is coming out in April, I believe, and I will buy a stack for all my baseball loving friends.

meant how much, keep lying to yourself about KO having no journalistic intergity because you with your made up BS about sporting events and endorssing just again proves that KO is beyond honest and beyond principeld and tolerant and that you have zero clue what honest and journalism means. I do not live in NY and I know that MLB made a lousy decision and that KO was telling the truth here like always. Again dude sports and watching them have zero to do with endorssing stuff that is excatly something that would come out of oreilly or Fox’s mouths who really do not know like you what journalism and hoensty are. Keep bashing me and KO, all it proves is that KO was telling the truth and that you do not want to hear it. Please MLB messed up, again let this happen in your town with your hero’s and than talk to me about the world tradegy and planes and all that other crap that you love to throw out there. This had nothing to do with patriotism, keep showing again why KO is this generations Murrow and why you will continue to look silly defending this crappy decision. Keep it up Joesph all you do is prove me right and show how awesome a journalist KO is and that you do not want to hear the truth about this issue.

Also Joesph why did NFL allow just the Giants to do it, were they also being unsentive to the people in the air planes that died, that is how lame that excuse is just like all your other embarrassing excuses and please keep defending them, you again are only showing how much journalistic intergity KO has and how much you have no idea what real journalism looks like, again I do not have to be a fan to know that you are only priting out BS and just proving KO right, and by defending it you only embarrass yourself. Again all I expect is for KO to be himself love him warts and all and even disagreeing I know and you love to again prove he this generations Murrow. Also democrats politicans go to those same sports events aka Obama likes football just as much as Bush, so how is that those events could be endorssing one policy but not the other, that is how your comment makes no sense and how you only embarrass yourself and only show how much journalistic intergity KO has by repeating it. This was a tradgey that never should have happened and people dying in airplanes still makes it tradgey and will never be an example to justify it as much as you wish it. Keep supporting corporations. That is all that your posts do. This is about principles not patriotism and KO and most other folks get that expect you, which also shows how principled KO is. Keep making me love him more and showing again why I love him warts and all. KO has never lied he does not know how to and you just proved it.

I never said he didn’t have any journalistic integrity. What I am claiming is that he made factual mistakes. For example Wright was wearing the hat that was taken away from him in the 8th inning. Plus listening to his commentary, you’d think that Baseball was keeping all of the procedes when they are actually are giving the money away to Charity. It seems in his outrage, he forgot to check his facts. I’m not saying he isn’t a good journalist or anything, I’m just saying he’s made some mistakes.

Joseph
That still does not say that he got facts wrong, the guys hate was removed it did not matter what ending, so again Ko did not get facts wrong. Again until MLB says how much was donated to charity, than if truth they did not donate at all to charity, KO got nothing wrong and you just keep showing me your dihonest when you keep denying that KO got stuff wrong when you know that is not true. KO told the truth, this face it was a destory by MLB and nothing you can say will change that fact. Keep making me love KO more and prove again to me why he I love to call him this generations Murrow. Sorry but you have not shown me one fact he got wrong, you just wish he got something wrong because you hate the fact he told the truth about MLB on this one.

Also Joseph thier is a difference between saying he made a mistake and journalistic intergity. But I hate to break it to you KO made no mistakes here. He got nothing wrong you should just say that you disagree and that is that, just like you and I will never agree on this. Nothing you say will convince me that Ko got stuff wrong because what I reading about it, he got nothing wrong, you and others are in the minority on this, alot of people who even disagree with KO agree with him here. The reality the people that made the mistakes were the MLB.

Excellent Keith. Thank you for this.

Last night Gary Cohen, the outstanding play-by-play announcer for the Mets on SNY, also criticized MLB for this move with Olbermann-like eloquence.

For the last time, I am not questioning his integrity. I’m simply documenting factual errors that He HAS made. 1. Josh Tole tweeted that they took away David Wrights cap in the fourth inning, yet when I tuned into the game in the 8th Wright was wearing the cap that was alledge to have taken away from him. Olberman made it sound like they took the cap and didn’t give it back. I watched his “special Commentary” last night and believe me that is how it sounded. Also, Olbermen made it sound as if Baseball is having players wear these caps simply so they make money, even after it was reported that they do this so they can raise money for charity. This is the sort of thing that he rightly criticizes Bill-O’Rielley and Fox new for all the time. In my CPHO, two wrongs do NOT make a right. Just because the competition does it, doesn’t mean you have to do it too. Get you facts straight before reporting on a story. That’s what I was taught when studying for MY degree in Journalism.

While I agree with the sentiments about this situation I can’t help but be struck by how much more of an outcry this symbolic issue has generated than the very real betrayal our government committed by first promising that all medical costs of the first responders would be covered then failing to deliver. I imagine that all of those firemen, police officers, EMTs and other responders and their families would gladly trade wearing a baseball cap for one day 10 years after for very real medical care. If only the same people so upset with this had instead voted out the politicians who turned their backs on these heroes while still claiming to care about them and calling up the images of 9/11 to get re-elected.

Never underestimate the power to rile up the American public with a symbol to deflect attention from a very real problem.

Again KO did not make a mistake, again it does not matter what ending the cap got taken away it was taken away, just because you saw something does not mean that the cap was not taken away, also Joseph, what part of percentage does the charity get the profits, saying donating to charity merans nothing completely nothing, you are not getting what KO and I and everybody else gets, saying that you are dontaing to charity does not mean that money is going to charity that is why KO rightful did not believe that line and I do not either, what percentage actually went to charity. So that is pure BS when they say it went to charity and it means absoutely nothing just like you seeing something like the cap there because your eyes can deseive you, so again KO made no mistakes as much as you wish it, you just disagree with the both of us. I do not care crap when MLB says they donate to charity because that means crap and turns out that MLB is lying when they say it, if they had put a percentage out than KO and I and others would believe it. So sorry you just keep proving that KO made no errors in that comment. YOu need to learn just because you saw something or thought that you saw something does not mean that it did not happen, also donating to charity means nothing because without a percentage that just proves that MLB is lying to you and you do not want to believe it. Again KO did not make a mistake in that comment and your posts just keep proving that he did not make a mistakes. Keep believeing the lies that MLB is putting out about the charity, because it was not true, again unless they show the percentage of what was given, the reality is that they never gave anything to charity. So you need to realize that I never convinced when someone says that they saw something because I know that eyes can easliy desiving so that does not prove that KO lied or made a mistake that just proved that you thought that you saw something. Just like the charity does not prove KO made a mistake because you have no idea what if they actually donated. KO does not go by stuff like that because he knows like I do that corporations can easily lie when they say that it goes to charity. Again the only way that the charity thing is true is if we knew the percentage it went, so you proof is not remotely concening that KO lied or made mistakes in that comment. Please learn that just because you saw something that you saw something does not mean that incident happened because again eyes can desice that is why I do not beileve you on that one. Just like the charity, because saying that you donated does not mean that you donated. So again until MLB puts up percentages that will only be the MLB lying to you and you believeing it because you cannot fathom that MLB made a distrous mistake. So sorry your posts only convince me more that KO was telling the truth and that he made no mistakes. I do not go by someones eyeisght and MLB charity thing because that is not proof that is just someone’s interputation and not at all convincing because that just puts more supicision in me that it was a distrous decision and that charity thing is the MLB covering it up. Again the charity thing is only believeable if we know what percentage was donated, until that is proof that the MLB is lying and trying to cover up which just shows that they know that they made a PR disater and it just proves KO right. Sorry again that post just proves that KO again made no mistakes and that as usual was telling the truth. Keep making me love him more and more. Again you are not getting that you are not provding proof that KO lied you just going by your interpetation and that does not show KO made a mistake or lied. Again think about it, the reality is that MLB lied to you not KO, again you do not know that they really donated to charity until they give the percentage that was given, so that statement means nothing and just makes the MLB more suspect. So again you keep just convining that KO told the truth and wrote a awesome right on Special Comment.

Also Joesph,
KO is not the only one that is critizing this decision, that means that they do not believe the charity thing either. Also again someone who also watched the game probably saw that he did not have the hat, that is how I know that is not proof that KO lied or made a mistake. It just common sense, and again I do not have to be a fan to know that proof that you are putting out is not showing that KO made mistakes in that comment. It just shows that you are believing a lie that the MLB put out, and that you thought that you saw something. Think about it. Again this all just showing that KO made no mistakes and was telling the truth and that he was showing again why I love to call him this generations Murrow. Again until the MLB says how much was donated that will always be a lie so that they can cover up the destrous move that they made and just another example of KO telling the truth and not knowing how to lie.

I don’ know what percentages the charities get. However, my point is that when you watch the commentary you get the impression that Baseball is keeping one hundred percent of the profits from the sale of these caps. Unfortunately, that is misleading because the whole point of these hats is to sell them for charity afterwords. Also if they took away the hats in the forth inning, how come David Wright was wearing one in the Eighth Inning. It is on the game broadcast and you can see it for yourself. I simply think that Olbermen should have done a little bit of fact checking before hand, because he bases most of his complain on Josh Tole’s twitter post. and Only Josh Tole’s Twitter post. Sorry, you need to do a better job.

Btw, I actually happen to agree with him on 95%of what he actually says on the air. I usually start disagreeiing with him when he talks about sports, which makes him look like just another Talking Head.

He did do fact checking, again that was your eye that saw that, that does not make it true, you are not getting the fact. There are a million people that watch the Mets even more on TV, one person saying that they saw the hat in the eigh mean squat, because again eyes descive people. Also again how do you know that MLB is telling the truth that these hats are being autioned off for charity afterwards, What part of organizations lying to you do you not get, you are not proving in any of your posts that KO did not fact check, he probably watched the game, he was probably was even there and he unlike you did not see the hat in the eigth inning, again you need to learn that eyes are deceving Joseph, saying that you saw it again does not mean that he was not wearing the cap in that inning. So no KO did not need to fact check that because that was not a mistake Joesph that was just your preception of what you saw and interputing differently than KO. Same with the auction just because they say that they will auction it off does not mean that it will happen. So again that statment Joseph does not show that KO did not fact check, that shows that you are believeing what ever is coming out of the MLB mouth, Joseph I sorry if you think that you think I do not know, I do not aways agree with KO either, but your first post gave was that gave the impression that you were bashing and that it was not even remotely disagreeing. You do not say that NFL is endorssing a policy when a poltican is just simply watching, I read stuff about progressives and Olbermann all the time and I have been able to tell what bashing is and what legit critism is. You were not showing legit critism espically on that first post, and you did say lack of journalistic intergity. If you had just said that you thought KO made a mistake or that you disagreed or were disappointed I would not have acted the way that I did, you need to know that percitption is a big factor in how other bloggers see you. I do not mind legit critism of KO, I know that he only human and not prefect, and yes I have even disagreed with him ala Obama and BP spill. So again I am truely sorry if I offended you but you need to word things better and not come here acting like people that really bash, just say that you disagree or you are disappointed, or that you thought KO made a mistake, I think that he was right on and I think that the evidence that you are giving me is very weak, and is one that is just showing that he was fact checking but came out with a different conclusion than you. So sorry about the wrong preciption, again the mistake that you made is that you need to word you thoughts different so it does not look like you are bashing. That is all. Peace.

The ol’ English teachers sees lots of errors in these comments. Somebody had a little Meurlot or did not go to Cornell. ;)

@ English “teacher” – I didn’t go to Cornell, but I noticed at least two major spelling errors in your very brief post – including the mangling of the word merlot. Perhaps spending more time studying and less time criticizing would better serve both you – and those you “teach.”

I was trying to fit in, Oscar. Merlot will still need a capital letter, as it is a proper noun. I don’t study anymore. Don’t teach much anymore, either. You are right, sir! Will do!

Pingback: The Weak In Rock » Things to remember, things to forget…

Guys I know I am not good at spelling, but my spelling has zip to do with critizing, if you think that I should not be speaking truth or my opoin because of spelling than you guys have no idea what legit critism is, keep proving why I am a KO fan and why some of you need to learn what legit critism is. Spelling and critism Patrica are two different things maybe you and Oscar might think that th person who wrote that had a disbility, also why oscar and patrica it okay for Joseph to critize me but I cannot him because my spelling is bad you two need to grow and learn I get to state my opoin and critsm despite spelling mistakes, you two being the spelling police just shows that I was telling the truth and you would rather bash me than speak to what I was saying, thanks you two for embarrassing yourselves.

Also patrica I am Olbermann fan like you are, I just disagree with Joseph and I also did not like the way that Joseph worded what he said the first time around, he sounded like what the trolls did, and his evidence was weak is saying KO should not talk about was wrong, you and Oscar want to also act like trolls, because you two going after spelling and how a person words something is not what a KO fan does, that is what trolls do. So why don’t you go after my comment instead of making up crap post saying that I do not get to critize because I spell bad. I want to see what both of your spelling looks like without spell check and all the other crap, also Oscar KO is a Cornell graduate and he even made spelling mistakes, you two need to retract you bashing tweets and apologize, next time you two go after content not spelling you look like and sound like the republicans KO goes after when you do that.

Also patrica and Oscar I am on yourside, why do want to bash the person on yourside of the issue. Please think before you type, you sound like reasonable people, please do not revert to what trolls do. KO has enough people bashing him, we do not need fans bashing other fans, Joseph sounded like a troll when he came on with the fact that if you watched a sport that means that sport is spourting thier political beilfs, and did not help when he said jouranlistic intergity instead of mistakes. If he had been like what he was in his last posts I would have not answered at all because I would have know that it is legit critism, and I have no problem with KO being critized, I do not want him prefect and I have disagreed with him and seen him make mistakes. As I have said I want him to be KO that it, I do not worship him and I do follow blindly, it just most of the time he and I come to the same conclusions. It just when I researched this story I could tell KO was right and I could tell when he gave me that evidence that it was weak and convinced me more that KO was right.
Reality is I do like bashing of anyone including KO. Again as you say words matter and this guy just phrased he thoughts wrong, he had used disappointed or mistakes or you are wrong I would have been fine because I would have know that it was legit. I call him this generations Murrow because he tells it like it is, even if I disagree or do not like it. As I said KO all you have to be is yourself and you will always have fan in me, love you warts and all.

If you are going after Joseph than it just as bad, that is not legit critism. I also apologize if I thought it was me because my spelling was not good either. Again please do not sound like trolls, concentrate on the content and leave the insults like bad spelling to the trolls, I love KO, but I get annoyed at him sometimes when he does. I do not mind when it a troll insult because that person was insulting him and not critizing the content, but when he does that is not after a insult, does not go well with me.

To those who Have their knickers in a bunch over the exchange between Patricia and me on spelling, I suggest that instead of resorting to name calling and the like (oooh, troll!) – you look at what I directed to her personally AND her response. If you do, you will see that she responded to my playful jab graciously and with good humor – and I respect her for that. My advice to those who are getting worked up over that and not the issue at hand is to chill – and think before – AND after – you type. Maybe you’ll catch a few more typos – and a LOT more misguided opinions before they are shared with others.

My turn. Heehee. I am truly sorry for any pain I inflicted on anyone. MS with cognitive loss makes it somewhat of a crap shoot every single time I go to make a comment or do some freelance writing. But I love it so much! When the TV station makes an error, I call and say, “This is the spelling police.” Then I reveal the error. They laugh and appreciate it and fix it before the next news program. History, I love your comments, and in my old age, I realize that spelling is not everything. Don’t anyone let me hurt you. I am so about peace and love and joy. Keith has been a hero of mine for many years. I was fired unfairly from teaching years ago, and his quest for truth is what has kept me going. My hearing is finally coming up after ten long years! There might be some justice for me. Please forgive me, and know that my intentions are good. Like the song says, “Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood.” Hugs all around! xo

Ideally before starting a half marathon program, you should have been training for about six months.

That is okay, and Oscar I not into name calling but I trying to make you see that we should judge on content and not on spelling that gets us down with trolls, which we are not, KO fans have always been better and will be better than this. And Patrica you are more than forgiving, just trying to make sure we judge on content not on simple spelling mistakes, KO fans like you me and Oscar are better than this and should always be better than the trolls that come and bash KO.

You are right, History! I can’t even kill a roach! I love KO and there are some great comments here! I have learned so much from Baseball Nerd! Just today I was watching the Yankees and the Red Sox and thinking…I even wanna chew gum like those guys! I can’t bring myself to spit, though! heehee Hugs!

You and me both. KO is the best, I love how he stands up for what he believes he keeps showing me why I will always call him this generations Murrow even if I disagree on something, love everything about him. He will be a remembered as a sports and jouranlistic legend. All he has to be himself and he will always have a fan in me. I also love hearing him talk about his passion of baseball. I also likes that he takes the weekends off to watch it, he sure deserves the rest from time to time with his fighting of the injustices of the world.

It was meant to be. I wish I could have had him in my gifted class! Without even testing him, I can tell you he is gifted. His ability to make connections is marvelous! Genius! I love that he cares about the poor and those who are unfairly treated. He could have taken all his money and retreated! But he didn’t. I often wonder what I would have done without him during the past ten years. Every day I would take heart, knowing that there was still somebody in the world like Keith who cared. Thank God for my family and for him. He is the best thing since Junior Mints in your popcorn at the movies! (We bring our own…too expensive at the theatre. Shhh. ;o)

Great project. Are you aware of the High Altitude and Near Space Conference being held in Oct. 19-21, 2009 in Englewood, Colorado? This is right up your alley!

I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating
