FBI: “The” Honus Wagner Was Trimmed
In 1991, I got a call from my friend Matt Federgreen, the proprietor of the Beverly Hills Baseball Card Shop and my co-host for a little segment I did on each of my half-hour-long Sunday night sportscasts on KCBS-Channel 2 in L.A.
Matt had been approached by Bruce McNall, the owner of the Los Angeles Kings and at that time the rising figure in hockey ownership and L.A. sports moguldom. McNall had made his millions buying and selling (and as the jury later agreed, often selling and re-selling and re-re-selling) antique coins, and he was fascinated by the upcoming auction of the Jim Copeland sports memorabilia. Big-money auctions were nothing new to the baseball card world, but this one was being handled by Sotheby’s, meaning the hobby was being mainstreamed into investment-grade collectibles.

The centerpiece of the Sotheby’s Auction was an unbelievably pristine copy of the 1909 American Tobacco Company card of Honus Wagner, hardly the scarcest, but handily the most famous, card in the landmark series we collectors call by its catalogue number “T-206.” McNall and a then-unidentified partner (who proved to be his star player, Wayne Gretzky) wanted the card and they wanted Federgreen’s expertise. The card looked brand new. It bore no earmarks of being a clever counterfeit. But it also bore no signs of nearly 92 years of aging. Unless somebody was standing at the printing press when the card was finished drying, and stuffed it between the pages of a book, and kept the book in a climate-controlled room from the opening days of the Presidential administration of William Howard Taft, and had only taken it out after the inauguration of George H.W. Bush, something seemed wrong.
Something was very wrong. I couldn’t go with Matt to the inspection of the Wagner that McNall had arranged for him. But Matt took a bunch of pictures, and the next time he came in to the studios he brought them.
Matt has a sly smile that usually gives him away. “Whaddya think?”
I took one look at the photos and said “It’s been trimmed.”
Matt laughed. “That’s what I told Bruce. He said thanks very much, he said he thought so too, he said he’d probably buy it any way, and he walked me to the door, and he paid me a very generous fee, and I left.”
I asked him to show me the photos again. They had rung too loud a bell. “I’ve seen this card before.”
Matt’s eyes lit up. By the following Sunday I had found in my rabbit’s warren of card-related stuff, photos of a Wagner that had been offered for sale in the early ’80s by a fellow who owned a baseball card store on Long Island outside New York City. I had no doubt and neither did Matt. Between his photos and mine we were looking at before-and-after shots of the same card.
Before and after somebody with the guts of a burglar and the skills of a circumcision specialist had trimmed the thing.
In its previous state the Wagner was an anomaly. It had very large white borders, and the card was thus perhaps 10% bigger than the average T-206. It looked like it had been hand-cut from a sheet of cards, and not done by a machine. Some of the corners were stubbed and worn from age. But the “face” of the card, the player’s image, the bright yellow background, the lettering, were shiny and virtually perfect. It had been handled, and handled an appropriate amount, since 1909. But whoever had done the handling had been very, very careful not to touch the face.
And then somebody bought it and actually cut away all the damage on the sides and sold it to Jim Copeland who had turned it over to Sotheby’s which would shortly sell it to Bruce McNall and Wayne Gretzky for $451,000. When McNall was exposed as a crook who would sell the same priceless coin to several different collectors (throwing in secure storage of it for a small additional fee – so that it was always around for him to show it and re-sell it to another collector even though he didn’t own it any more) Gretzky got full possession of the treasure and sold it off to Walmart as a publicity thing, basically at a break-even figure. The price has gone up and up and up, and “the” Wagner was finally sold to Conservative political figure and Arizona Diamondbacks’ owner Ken Kendrick, who five years ago paid $2,800,000 for it.
It’s not a fake. But it’s also not an original.
And for years, collectors and experts have murmured about the process by which a really nice Wagner had been altered, and the alterations hidden from the public (even receiving the stamp of approval by the presumptive “final word” of a card authenticating company which got enormous publicity – and undeserved credibility – for encasing the card in the first of its plastic “slabs”), and the card became the image of the sports memorabilia hobby.
But who was behind this? And, Heavens, who cut the card?
Now we have the answer, courtesy the FBI…
According to the indictment, in advertising portraying Mastro Auctions as the premier seller of valuable items, including the world’s most expensive baseball trading card, a Honus Wagner T-206 card, Mastro allegedly failed to disclose that he had altered the Wagner T-206 card by cutting the sides in a manner that, if disclosed, would have significantly reduced the value of the card.
The “Mastro” in question is Bill Mastro, who I have known since we were both teenagers. At age 19, he had bought a Wagner for $1,500 and thus completed his T-206 set. Those of us whose own massive collections might have been worth a total of $1,500 were aghast. My friend and mentor Mike Aronstein told me that some of Mastro’s relatives had actually gathered together to consider what we would now call an “intervention” or forcing him to seek psychological help. It was believed that no Wagner had previously sold for more than around $250. At the left is how this startling development was contemporaneously covered by a monthly publication I used to write for called The Trader Speaks.
Mastro was already buying and selling cards that were not intended for his own collection. By the ’80s he had gone from card dealer to the founder of one of the first sports memorabilia auction houses, Mastro Auctions, and would regularly work the phones to try to drum up publicity for his auctions.
It eventually became a $50,000,000 business. And now it’s gotten Mastro and some of his colleagues indicted. And not just for the deception regarding the Wagner.

CHICAGO — Online and live auctions of sports memorabilia and other collectibles conducted during the 2000s by the former Mastro Auctions, which was based in suburban Chicago, routinely defrauded customers, according to a federal indictment unsealed today. William Mastro, who owned the former business that once billed itself as the “world’s leading sports and Americana auction house,” together with Doug Allen and Mark Theotikos, both former executives of Mastro Auctions, were indicted on fraud charges for allegedly rigging auctions through a series of deceptive practices, including so-called “shill-bidding,” designed to inflate prices paid by bidders and to protect the interests of consignors and sellers at the expense of unwitting bidders.
In short, if you bought from Mastro, you stood an excellent chance of bidding against people who were there only to drive up the price.
For that part of the story, I refer you to the whole press release at the Sports Collectors Digest website. The New York Daily News has even more detail on the extraordinary tale of “the” Wagner, which after two decades of whispering, we can now shout: has been deceptively altered.
Just for fun, I should note here that the entire story of what originally made the Wagner card scarce in the first place also doesn’t add up. The timeline is so messy that it has the card being withdrawn at Wagner’s behest (supposedly because he didn’t want to be involved in selling cigarettes to kids) after he saw an advertisement for it in a national sports magazine. But the ad didn’t appear until July, 1909 and the card was supposed to have been withdrawn in March, 1909. But I’ll save that tale of what might’ve been the first card made deliberately scarce, for another time.
Also, this isn’t the scarcest card of all time, nor even in this set (there are at least 75 of them; there may not be as many examples of the T-206 card of an A’s pitcher named Eddie Plank, and there are only three or four copies of a rare T-206 variation of a Yankees’ pitcher Joe Doyle, and there are unique examples of eight minor league T-206 ‘proof’ cards featuring players who never got into the issued set, and based on recent developments there may yet be a 525th card to add to the checklist). More on that some other time.
Lastly, if you’re ever actually talking about Honus Wagner – the immortal shortstop or the card or now the FBI Fraud Case – the name doesn’t rhyme with “bonus.” Honus was short for the Germanic version of John, Johannes. So he answered to “Honnis,” not “Ho-nus.”

A little OT, did the Negro League players have baseball cards?
Your knowledge of everything baseball never ceases to amaze me. This time you just looked at a card and knew something was not quite right? But then thinking about it, I figured you’ve been staring at these cards most of your life, you should know what you’re looking at. This was a fascinating piece about which I know little to nothing about. It’s a shame that some would take a pure hobby and damage it all for the sake of money. This blog is also helpful to those just starting to collect cards. Buyer beware may be the theme to remember. Thanks ever so much.

It was hard when Wayne Gretzky left California to play hockey in the godforsaken Midwest. But I think we finally forgave him, and he remains an officer and a gentleman, at least in my book.

What people won’t do for money! Super story…or should I say truth? I got all my baseball cards and Beatle cards in the pursuit of bubble gum. I still can’t watch a game without Double Bubble. I love when they show those great big canisters of it in the dugouts on TV. Why not lay off History? Most of us here are true fans of KO. All things are connected, so since we are in America at this moment, let folks have a say. Trim some mean, Jaws, and you might just become a collectible yourself! Happy Olympics everyone!

I’ve known the orthodox account (that he objected to endorsing tobacco) since ’77 or so. I’ve known that there are those who dismiss that almost as long, but this is the first time that I’ve been made aware of the sports magazine ad timeline aspect of this.

I have just been re-reading Lawrence Ritter’s The Glory of Their Times, which Red Barber called the greatest baseball book ever written, and who would argue with Red? The praise all of them have when they refer to Honus Wagner is a reminder of his greatness.

I wonder if you are on twitter, go to google and type in Olbermann and twitter, and you easily access his twitter page, I went there and I saw KO tweet about his thoughts on the trade, of course I could be wrong, but just want to let you know for future reference you can always go on his tweeter page, it easy to access even for me who not on twitter, he talks alot about baseball there, and will meation things there sometimes that he will not always do a blog. Wow another person that has no idea about KO professional history, August KO was never fired from every single employer the that is made up, they only place beisde Current that he was fired from was Fox Sports and like Current he was unjustily fired there, because he did a story which was true about Murdoch selling the LA Dodgers and Murdoch like always hated the truth being told. He even proved KO right by selling them, showing just how he was being unjustily fired. The others places you meation MSNBC and ESPN he quit and even then he was asked back or hired back.
August here the real story about why he quit there, KO hit his head on a subway car being in a hurry to do a story the injure cause him not being able to drive, on top of that he is single, this are two not combinations when you in a subarb like Bristol, it was why KO hated Bristol so much. Anyway, when his contract came up, KO asked ESPN if he could go back to a place where he had been born and grown up and which has always been true to his heart, it called New York or I should say New York city to exact, basically showing that he was homesick, so he asked ESPN if he could broadcast from there instead of Bristol, ESPN said no they wanted him to remain in Bristol and neither he nor ESPN could budge, so as the result the parted ways instead of renewing the contract, he even said goodbye to everyone on Sports Center which you do not get to do if you had been fired. Having said all that ESPN hired KO back so he could do a hour with Patrick on his radio show, which he did until Dan parted ways with ESPN, so he never got fired there, left because he and ESPN could not come to agreement when it came to re-newing the contract, that is not an example of someone being fired unless you have people like you who show that they have no logic or just rather bash and make up crap about KO’s career than learn the truth.
MSNBC
KO went there for the first time in 1996 after he left ESPN or you could say quit ESPN, everything was going fine there, until Lewinsky scandal hit, KO covered it like everyone else, but he started having reservations about it, and he did not like that he was no talking about the other news stories of the day. He even said in interview on CSPN that he was trying to get MSNBC mangement to understand that thier are other things to cover and other stories going on beside this scandal. He was notcing that people would talk about even when there was no breaking news as he told Brain Lamb in that interview. He did a speech for Cornell were he talked about moral force and basically quit MSNBC, but again he came back in 2003 mended fences with mangement and stayed and helped make that channel the success it is today. Mangement being over there being the hypocrites that they are get on his case about donating his own money to two democrats in Arizona because he worried about and rightly so with what happened to Gilford one of the ones he donated to thier safety. They suspend him while letting Scarbough get away with donating money to republican candidates and not getting any punishment until KO fans get on MSNBC mangements case, they have also allowed Shultz to speak at the Wisconsin DNC convention and Geogary at a republican event showing that mangement over there cares nothing about nutrality as they claim it and are lying when they say they do. Anyway KO again mutal parts ways or aka quits MSNBC and again gets to do a last show before he leaves, again showing that he never got fired from there. You do not do last shows or final shows as they call it if you are fired. He did not do one when he got unjustily fired at Current, but did ones when he quit MSNBC and ESPN again showing that he quit those two places and were never fired, they even hired them back, showing that KO no idea how to burn a last bridge.
Again you show that you would rather lie about kO’s professional life than explain why Hyatt/ Current mangement who say that CNO was a title, but never got twitters who were saying that KO got rid of Vanguard and never got on Medite case for there non-sense story about KO being polite after a interview with the “we’ll get back to you” some how meaning that he was interviewing Cenk for a job or liked Cenk and wanted him, when that was not even remotely true and all he was doing was being polite. That story was showing that KO was suppose to have authority over the news department, which again Current said was just a title, but again never deny the story, basically again showing that was not a title and that KO was suppose to run the department and that Current broke the contract when they hired Borhem as president. Hyatt says that KO never allows staff to tweet than how come his staff was tweeting who the guests would be when Shuster was hosting, also why was KO tweeting to his fans about his illness, from saying that his ENT was putting him vocal rest for a week and than tweeting that the ENT had noticed that he had a relapse and had to go on rest again, along with saying that he was going on a pre-planned vacation and even in Current’s counter-suit there is nothing no emails nothing that is getting on KO’s case about, and saying that they had not approved it, which shows that they did a aprove it and are lying when they say otherwise, or just showing that they are not organized and are lying when they say they are. Anyway why did KO even tweet when Seder was hosting, showing that KO was okay with other people hosting Countdown because he had no problem with Seder even saying that Seder was hosting the show. Maybe that should tell you that KO was only angry at Press and Spitzer hosting Countdown because he had not pre- approved them. Press has never twitted that he hosting Countdown. Also Hyatt/Current magement never deines that they were giving out wrong info when KO says in the suit why he never allowed them to tweet about the show. I sorry Hyatt but even I and or anyone in KO’ shoes would not allow you to tweet if you were telling viewers about guests that KO was never having on, or segments that were not schedule to be shown, that only confuses people, it also shows Hyatt that Current is not organized and do not care about viewers or KO’s audience that they would say that KO has to allow them to keep tweeting about shows and giving that wrong info. Hyatt also why when KO said that you blackmailed and threaten fire staff why did you not deny that. August people who threaten to fire people and blackmail like Hyatt did on the who released salary info along with not deny that he said KO’s manger but only says KO in counter-suit, basically shows that they are the guilty party on that one, also if you do reasearch you see that media always uses source on CUrrent and KO and his team weither it is mangement, laywer or him thier name, and also that was a interview but it says source, so if KO wanted to release that info he would have just told the reporter that, meaning that thier would be no source in the article. The fact that thier was a source in that article and that KO had done Lettermen and other press at that time after that suppose email, were could have released it but did not along with the fact that in the case of the primary story KO basically kept his mouth shut while Current kept talking thier asses off to the press, even saying stuff negitve about KO. While KO said that he was happy at Current and everything was going fine, basically defending the company, shows that Hyatt released the info and again would rather lie and show how dishonest he is than admit the truth, again you do not blackmail and threaten to fire which Hyatt did because he never deined it when KO said that in the suit means that you have something to hide and are the guilty party. Also Current tries to have kO do a commerical for AT&T and have AT&T as a sponser, along with releasing documents that suppose to private, and again talking to press left and right when it comes to the primary story, and again talking negatively about KO in the press, showing how unprofessional and irresponisble and again disorangzied even say that lawyers are involve, in that artcle that KO and his lawyer are saying things are being worked out, and Current says that is sabtoging the comapany, excuse me Hyatt how is that sabtoge, oh that right it is not, Current was sabotgaing itself by showing that they lie when they say that are corporate independent by trying to get KO to do that commerical for AT&T and have that AT&T sponsership and realease letters and emails to the press and even talking negatively about thier star, that is what sabtoge Hyatt is, not a quto that is confirming what you are already saying about lawyers working out contract details. By saying that Current is saying that lawyers are involve shows that you are telling the public that, which again showing that Hyatt that you not KO are sabtoging Current. August Current says that they are in charge of the business side and KO is in charge of content. Fixing tenichal problems is business, same with getting adocute studios, the fact that Current did not do that and only complained about insufficant crap like staff size and who built the set of designed it shows that they are lying when they say that they are responsible, that is how BS the start up excuse is, even start ups take responsiblity and try to fix what they are in charge aka tenichal problems. KO could not use his set because electrity kept going out, it even happened when Seder was hosting, wow basically KO had no way of invoding not doing Countdown in the dark, showing that he could not use the set, but still used it for State of the Union and primaries. Hyatt says that KO would not promote but, KO does not deny when KO said that he had agreed to do the TCA but only backed out when Hyatt said that he could not answer reporters questions honestly. He even lies about KO and when it comes to promotion, he says KO stopped in October, so why can I go on a fansite and see a page that even has tweets about KO doing Lettermen that is dated late October, basically close to Halloween. Wow Hyatt explain again how organized Current is. Also Hyatt promote does not mean that KO does the shows and does the articles that you want him to do. KO did Lettermen, Colbert, Ferguson, Hollywood reporter, NPR Fresh Air, Marh, and Rolling stone maginze, wow Hyatt I did not know that was not promoting. Also Hyatt Cenk has only done TCA and a couple of articles from what I have seen so again August why can Cenk get away with not really promoting TYT on Current, and Gramholm doing some talk shows Meet the Press and Lettermen once along with TCA and Hyatt is okay with that but KO does all the shows that I meation and he somehow not promting Countdown and CUrrent, he tweeted us who was on the show when he was on. Also Hyatt why did you get rid of co CEO Rostheal espically if he knew more about the TV business and how to handle stars like KO wow maybe you not KO are the one that cannot work with others, beacuse that shows that you have to be the boss and control the show, cannot have anyone who works with you. Again repeating that Hyatt not KO cannot work with others. Also Hyatt I do not believe a guy who fired someone with AIDS when it comes to ethics and morals, because you to me that is something Fox not a channel saying that they are news and progressive would do. Also Hyatt progressive channels do not put out personal letters when they fire someone and put out rumors that can easily be debunked like that cab one. There are plenty of people in this category that I can have a great conversation with who I differ with in other areas. WASHINGTON – During an interview yesterday with Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s Hardball, President Obama responded to the host’s hard hitting questions and in-depth scrutiny with surprising candor. Following is a transcript of Chris Matthew’s interview with President Obama.

Keep basing KO, I read those emails and I have to laugh that you think that shows that KO broke the contract or that he was the bad guy of all about ego. I would be angry if people were banging trash cans when I was doing a show, I would be pissed if I was about to do a show and people where trying to take photos of me, wow these emails Science is what reasonable people will call reasonable complaints, also where was KO threatening staff and bashing people, I can see why KO would come close to thorwing something. You show that KO temper was not the problem, I want to laugh that Current thinks that this shows that KO was dangerous, this shows just how frustrated KO was with a studio that was falling apart. The emails at the top show that KO had everyreason to throw something, I would be at the point of throwing something if I was dealing with people interupting me during a show, and people thinking that it okay to take a picture before a show is about to begin. You still have not shown proof that KO’s all about ego and that he has a bad personality, you have not even shown that KO broke the contract. All you show me is that I am right when I say that Current broke his contract. This past week, those attacks have hit Cornell particularly hard, as Ann Coulter ’84, right-wing political pundit, mocked the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences on her website.
In a blog post last Wednesday, Coulter, who attended the College of Arts and Sciences, questioned the educational background of Keith Olbermann ’79, one of her left-wing counterparts, who attended the agriculture college.
“Keith didn’t go to the Ivy League Cornell; he went to the Old MacDonald Cornell,” Coulter stated on her blog, AnnCoulter.com. “Olbermann’s incessant lying about having an ‘Ivy League education’ when he went to the non-Ivy League ag school at Cornell would be like a graduate of the Yale locksmithing school boasting about being a ‘Yale man.’”
Coulter went on to assert that the school has an average SAT score “of pulling guards at the University of South Carolina” and an “acceptance rate [of] one of every one applicants.”
Coulter’s blog post was in response to comments made by Olbermann on the academic credentials of Monica Goodling, deputy director of public affairs for the Department of Justice. Goodling, who attended the Christian fundamentalist Regent University Law School, was an integral part in the politicized hiring of U.S. attorneys during the Bush administration. During Goodling’s Senate hearing in 2007, Olbermann regularly referred to her alma mater as “Religious Lunatic University” and insulted its validity, claiming that her degree “cost her 100 box tops through the mail.”
“I would venture to say that the students at Goodling’s law school at Regent University are far more impressive than those at the Cornell agriculture school — the land-grant, non-Ivy League school Keith attended.” Coulter wrote.
On the day following Coulter’s post, Olbermann defended his degree on his show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, citing the true statistics of admission for the current class at the agriculture college, as well as pulling out his diploma from Cornell University.
“Seriously, in four years as a student in Cornell, and nearly 30 years as an alumnus, I have never before heard one graduate of one of the university‘s colleges belittling all its other colleges as not counting,” Olbermann said on his show. “We have always considered each other worthy, hard working and equal, and having benefited from an incredible educational opportunity. Sorry you missed yours, Ann. “
Coulter’s comments struck a chord among members of the Cornell community, specifically those members of the agriculture school.
“I believe that Keith Olbermann did a great job in his response, and I don’t think anyone will take her flawed facts seriously,” said Linda McCandless ’74, the director of communications for the agriculture college. “The College is not going to have an official response. There is little to be gained in entering a fracas with Ms. Coulter. Rather, we will let Keith Olbermann carry the flag for us. He is doing an admirable job.”
“I found her comments disturbing and offensive,” said Liz Kreitinger ’08, a student in the agriculture school. “Her ignorant statements demeaned my academic achievements.”
Others, however, have taken the comments in a lighter fashion.
“Personally, I’m not a great fan of Ms. Coulter’s work. But in this case I think her comments were pretty funny and made in jest.” Jordan Fabian ’09, editor-at-large of The Cornell Review, stated in an e-mail yesterday. “I think an informed reader should be able to determine that she wasn’t engaging in serious statistical analysis of the CALS admission standards versus those of the Arts College. She was clearly trying to poke fun at Mr. Olbermann.”
The situation continues to unfold as Coulter and Olbermann butt heads via different media outlets, and here another Last week, one of our favorite loud-mouth “conservatives” Ann Coulter decided to call into question her long-time rival Keith Olbermann’s Ivy League credentials:

Many people have contacted us about the false and negative statements about Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences being made by Ann Coulter in the media recently.
Cornell as a whole–and all of its colleges–are considered “Ivy League.” The term “Ivy League” was initially used by sportswriters, and became the official name in 1954 of the NCAA Division I athletic conference to which Cornell belongs. The “Ancient Eight” are Cornell, Princeton, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, and Harvard. Additionally, CALS admits 1 out of every 5 applicants, as does the College of Arts & Sciences.

Wow Cornell college is saying that its Ag school is Ivy League, one graduate from Cornell even told that twitter Scince that was believing like you are that debunked lie that Coulter was disembard from the Cornell alum, and he and another grad were on KO’s side telling that person that AG was IVy League, that twitter did not even get which I found out with all the research that I did, that anyone telling me that AG school is a state school like that new Mag article that she tried to tweet are lying to you, AG school is privately owned but is funded by the state, that is not what a defention of a state school is, here is more about itThe reason why you won’t find a lot of Cornellians going into the details of the argument is because Coulter’s allegations are patently absurd.
All of Cornell is land-grant. All of Cornell is considered a private institution. All undergraduate students at Cornell are eligible to compete in the Ivy League. There is no serious distinction between students of different colleges on campus, nor of alums once they graduate. There is more variance in the academic aptitudes of students within any one college than across the colleges. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers a lot of different majors that cater to more than farmers and veterinarians.
So, Keith may come across as a buffoon when he touts his undergraduate education, but nothing that he has said is incorrect. Moreover, he has never directly contrasted his own education with that of others. He may have gotten a carried away when he questioned the politicization of hiring standards at the Department of Justice, but his Cornell education was never a part of that charade and to call him out on the basis of these falsehoods constitutes a ridiculous ad hominem attack. (That said, you can probably see where I am coming from here. I’m not the biggest fan of Olbermann, but I’m certainly not a fan of Coulter.)

Give us the facts about admissions and SAT standards (past and present).
It’s tough to dig up admissions standards from the late 70s, but all of the colleges at Cornell have been ‘competitive’ (in that there are more qualified students than the University can admit) since at least the 50s. This even includes the school of Human Ecology, which was a predominantly female school until the 70s. At the time Olbermann and Coulter were students, I suspect that the Arts college has an acceptance rate that was probably in the low-to-mid 30s and CALS was probably in the mid 40s. Neither were likely the least selective programs in the Ivy League, to boot.
Today, the ACT ranges for the two schools are about the same, but the SAT average differs a bit — 1420 versus 1370 — and it’s really nothing to write home about, as, again, aptitudes will vary far widely within each school than across each school. The CALS school is likely brought down by students studying agriculture, for which most educators agree that SAT scores are not nearly the most important academic consideration.
the funding of each college
CALS receives around 20 percent of its operating budget from the State of New York. This makes up for the discounted tuition that state residents enjoy, as well as to pay for the additional research and outreach that CALS conducts. (There are extension offices in every county of New York State.) Keep in mind that nearly every single college in the country receives “public” funding, whether it be Pell Grants for tuition or federal research dollars. Cornell is just a bit different as it has a unique relationship with the State of New York.
the courses/difficulty on each campus
I’m not certain what you mean by “each campus”, as there is only one Ithaca campus at Cornell. But both CALS and CAS are known to be home to some of the easier majors on campus — Development Sociology in CALS, Art History and many of the area/ethnicity Studies in CAS. At the same time, students in both colleges can major in biology, which is widely seen as one of the most difficult majors on campus.
The Communication Department itself is noted for a couple of popular classes in rhetoric and media studies. It’s generally seen as one of the easier majors on campus, but by no means is a joke, and a lot of the coursework revolves around pretty heavy readings in psychology and sociology. One of my roommates went on to get a Masters at Harvard and now is a Presidential Management Fellow in Health Communications for the CDC.
What’s more important, though, is that students at Cornell tend not to label others by their degree/major. An engineer may be a gifted poet. An English major may have a knack for computer programming. A student in the Communication department may be fiercely interested in sports and politics and spend all of his waking hours at the campus radio station…
comparisons between other Communications programs of the time
I would say it has always been characterized as a strong program, but it definitely has gotten stronger in recent years. That said, its students have always been strong. Other prominent alums of the Communication department include the Director of Content for Google, the Directors of Entertainment for both NBC and Fox (guess who Andy Bernard was modeled after?), the President of Nintendo, and an anchor for Good Morning America.
The department originated out of a desire to study the most effective techniques to disseminate information to the public. (Strangely enough, a university that was founded on the principle of advancing pragmatic knowledge would want to figure out how to best distill its work…) Over time, it has evolved to encompass not only the dissemination of scientific knowledge, but also to study how people interact with old and new media, combined with changing information technologies.
how long was the Ag school part of SUNY before it became a Cornell run college, when did it switch over?
While appropriations for CALS have come through SUNY until recently, it has always been seen as a private, Cornell-run college. That’s why they are seen as contract colleges — unlike the SUNY system, the state has no direct control over its resource allocation. There have been decisions by the New York State Court of Appeals to this affect.
This school started as a land grant and here is more stuff that I found The New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (abbreviated to CALS or Ag School) is a statutory college at Cornell University, a private university located in Ithaca, New York.[3] With about 3,100 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students enrolled, it is the third-largest college of its kind in the United States and the second-largest undergraduate college or school at Cornell. It is the only school of agriculture in the Ivy League. The undergraduate business program at CALS is one of only two such Ivy League programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).[4]
As part of Cornell’s land-grant mission, the college jointly administers New York’s cooperative extension program with the College of Human Ecology and it runs both the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, in Geneva, New York, and the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, in addition to many other research facilities around the state.[5]
For 2007-08, CALS total budget (excluding the Geneva Station) is $283 million, with $96 million coming from tuition and $52 million coming from state appropriations. The Geneva Station budget was an additional $25 million.[6] and this Under the Morrill Act, states were obligated to fund the maintenance of land grant college facilities, but were not obligated to fund operations. Subsequent laws required states to match federal funds for agricultural research stations and cooperative extension. In his inaugural address as Cornell’s third president on November 11, 1892, Jacob Gould Schurman announced his intention to enlist the financial support of the state.[72] Until that point, Cornell’s relationship with the state was a net economic loss. Cornell was offering full scholarships to four students in each New York assembly district every year and was spending funds to serve as the state’s land-grant university. It determined to convince the state to become a benefactor of the university, instead. In 1894, the state legislature voted to give financial support for the establishment of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine and to make annual appropriations for the college.[73] This set the precedents of privately-controlled, state-supported statutory colleges and cooperation between Cornell and the state. The annual state appropriations were later extended to agriculture, home economics, and following World War II, industrial and labor relations.
In 1882, Cornell opened the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York, the sixth oldest institution of its kind in the United States.[74] It made significant advances in scientific agriculture and for many years played an active role in agriculture law enforcement.
In 1900, a home economics curriculum was added to Cornell’s Agriculture college. This was expanded to a separate state-supported school in 1919.[75] The Home Economics School, in turn, began to develop classes in hotel administration in 1922, which spun off into a separate, endowed college in 1950.[76]
In 1898, the New York State College of Forestry opened at Cornell, which was the first forestry college in North America.[77] The College undertook to establish a 30,000-acre (120 km2) demonstration forest in the Adirondacks, funded by New York State.[78] However, the plans of the school’s director Bernhard Fernow for the land drew criticism from neighbors living on Saranac Lake, Knollwood Club, and Governor Benjamin B. Odell vetoed the 1903 appropriation for the school.[79] In response, Cornell closed the school.[80] By some reports, Cornell gained annual state funding of the College of Agriculture in exchange for closing the forestry college.[81] Subsequently, in 1911, the State Legislature established a New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University,[82] and the remains of Cornell’s program became the Department of Natural Resources in its Agriculture College in 1910.[77] However, Cornell had contracted with the Brooklyn Cooperage Company to take the logs from the forest, and the People of the State of New York, Knollwood Club members (“People v. the Brooklyn Cooperage Company and Cornell”) sued to stop the destructive practices of Fernow even before the closing of the school.[83] Cornell University lost the case in 1910 and on appeal in 1912. Cornell eventually established a research forest south of Ithaca, the Arnot Woods. When New York State later funded the construction of a Forestry building for the Agriculture school, New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell named it Fernow Hall.
In 1914, the US Department of Agriculture began to fund cooperative extension services through the land grant college of each state, and Cornell expanded its impact by sending agents to spread knowledge in each county of New York State. Although Syracuse had started awarding forestry degrees at this point, Cornell’s extension agents covered all of home economics and agriculture, including forestry.
In 1945, the New York State Legislature founded the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell, in response to requests from organized labor and Democratic leaders.[84] The school quickly gained national stature when U.S. Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, who was the first female US Cabinet member and served longer than anyone else as Secretary of Labor (12 years), joined the ILR faculty. Since agricultural interests were mostly affiliated with the Republicans, Cornell enjoyed bi-partisan support following World War II.
In 1948, the Legislature placed all state-funded higher education into the new State University of New York (SUNY). Cornell’s four statutory colleges (agriculture, human ecology, labor relations and veterinary medicine) have been affiliated with SUNY since its inception, but did not have any such state affiliation prior to that time. Statutory college employees legally are employees of Cornell, not employees of SUNY. The State Education Law gives the SUNY Board of Trustees the authority to approve Cornell’s appointment of the deans/unit heads of the statutory colleges, and control of the level of state funding for the statutory colleges.[85]
Today, state support is significant. In 2007-08, Cornell received a total of $174 million of state appropriations for operations.[86] Of the $2.5 billion in capital spending budgeted for 2007–2017, $721 million was to come from the state of New York.[87] and stop of that Science the reason why Cornell and others are consider Ivy League is because of the scholastic sports division that they are in, that does not effect what part of the college that they live in, and as I found out people that are in either one of those departments taking classes from either depearment, so the fact that you believe that a person that never went to Cornell and has no idea how colleges work and do not get that a state school is not that is run by the state not one that is privately owned but gets state funds, so that twitter is lying to you. People that are going about the fact that KO makes millions wow, Science again explain how does that have to do with ego, so he can make alot of money doing somethat he wants to do, that Science to again anyone using what you obviously do not want to use and that is your brain, and to someone who has what you do not have commen sense comes from people that are more jealous over the fact that he became as sucessful as he did that he does not even need to work. Science I see those tweets and those people are always making fun like saying things that are not true, like he got fired from MSNBC and ESPN, when it is a well know fact to anyone with a brain and common sense that he quit both places. People that say that KO who has been in the broadcasting busniess for 33 years and helped make Sports Center the success that it is today and put MSNBC and the prime time programing the success that it is today, a failure those are people that I know and people again with commen sense and brains know not to listen to, because we do not need KO to be able to debunk all that. So I have to laugh at again at this stupid post you put up that just embarrasses you with showing how inteillgent KO is and that you how you love to post unitelligent crap, people bullying him on twitter which those tweets are, have nothing to do with KO’s ego, he has every right and should be blocking them, he does not need to engage with bullies and people that only want to lie about his education and where he went to school, that is not what disagreement is. Pregame 9/12/12 Mets Nationals – Keith brought his Honus Wagner baseball card to the game. Mark spent some time with him talking about it. Keith Olbermann spent the first twenty years of his career in sports journalism. He was a sports correspondent for CNN and for local TV and radio stations in the 1980s, winning the Best Sportscaster award from the California Associated Press three times. He co-hosted ESPN’s SportsCenter from 1992 to 1997. From 1998 to 2001, he was a producer and anchor for Fox Sports Net and a host of Major League Baseball on Fox.
