Youkilis Not Expected Back This Year

Two unimpeachable sources now advise that Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis, who appeared to jam his thumb while batting the other night, has in fact so severely torn a muscle – possibly a torn ligament – that whether or not he will actually require surgery on the injured hand, he is not expected to play again this season.

Youkilis is, as revealed earlier, headed for a further examination tomorrow by Dr. Thomas Graham, hand specialist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Further details as they become available.

I’m going to keep it classy, like the guy whose birthday I was born on (Jason Kendall!), but from a strictly win-loss perspective this is good news for Yankee fans. Of course, Beckett could hit Tex on the hand and we’d be D-E-D too. And Big Papi would have been a bigger loss. I don’t see how I could hate the Red Sox more, but I was happy for Mike Lowell when he hit that home run in his first at-bat (first pitch?). So he might step up in Youkilis’s place. If this had happened one week earlier, or even a few days, Prince Fielder might be Boston-bound, or Dunn, or Lowell’s ex-teammate Lee (if he didn’t block the trade, which I think he would have). Anyhow, even if of Youkilis I say “bats right, throws tantrums,” he’s the sort of player you hate if he’s on the other team, but because of his grit and fiery competitiveness, I’m sure they love having him on their team. Get well soon.
